Feng Shui Home Decoration
Feng shui is the use of balancing energy in a home for the occupant to achieve good health and fortune. The term evolved from agricultural society. In Chinese feng means wind and shui means water.
Tools
Before a person can apply the techniques of feng shui to their home they must purchase or download a bagua. The bagua is an octagonal grid that is used to determine what elements should be used in decorating.
Sketching
In order to use the bagua, each room in the house must be sketched. Sketch every part of the house including all fixtures like bathtubs, toilets, doors, windows, and sinks.
Use the bagua by placing it over the sketch of each room. This will show which area of the bagua the room falls into. For example, does it fall in the area of wealth and abundance, or into the area of relationships and love? Each of these categories contains at least one of the five Chinese elements, which is where a decorator will draw ideas.
Element Fire, Relationships and Love
Pink represents earth and fire elements. Use items that contain fire and earth elements in these areas of the home, such as a fireplace, candles or plants. Incorporate pink into these items as well.
Use fabrics that are either synthetic or silk in these areas, along with geometric shapes and animal prints. Artwork could depict the sunrise, or bright yellow flowers. Abstract art will work as long as it is geometric in design.
Element Earth, Fame and Reputation
Red represents accomplishment. Use items that are strong and sturdy in these areas. Include dark woods and reds in the decorations.
Areas of the house that fall into this category should feature items made of stone and ceramic. Use yellows and earth tones; patterned furniture is also recommended. Artwork should include sculptures or paintings of deserts or other landscapes.
Element Wood, Health
Natural colors should be used in these rooms. Use plants, flowers, paintings and pictures that depict natural settings like mountains and forests. Fabrics include rayon and linen; colors of choice are shades of green and blue. This area should be clean at all times and dust-free.
Element Metal
In the areas of a home that fall under the element metal, silver, gold, copper and jewel tones should be used. Round and dome shapes such as polka dots and semi-circles should be featured in decorating. Metal sculptures are great additions to these areas.
Element Water
These areas in the home include kitchens and bathrooms. Fabric that is sheer or shimmers should be used, along with mirrors and glass. Use black and shades of blue for walls and decor. Artwork suggestions include anything that represents water and water features.
