Countertops

Cabinets
Years of opening and closing, dirty fingers and cooking grease all combine to take their toll on kitchen cabinets. If the cabinets are still in good working condition, perhaps the best choice is simply to have the cabinets refinished.
Either hire a professional or do it yourself to save money. If the cabinet bases are sound, but the doors need work, the cabinets can be refaced, a process in which the bases of the cabinets are refinished and the cabinet doors are replaced.
To the extreme, replace all of the existing kitchen cabinets with new ones. Either choice makes a welcome difference in a kitchen and are variable according to budget and desires.
Floors
For years, the basic linoleum floor was the choice for kitchen floors, but not today. Recent years have seen an explosion in the types of floor coverings available for kitchen floors.
From newer, more durable types of linoleum, ceramic tile, stone, polished concrete and wood flooring, the choices to choose from are many for kitchens.
Choose materials suited to your unique situation, as some types of materials available for kitchen floors may not withstand heavy traffic and extensive use. Costs also vary depending upon the materials used, so keep this in mind when choosing.
Paint and Lighting
A less expensive choice to improve a kitchen is to apply a fresh coat of paint to the walls. Whether changing the entire color scheme or brightening the existing space, choose paint that is recommended for the kitchen area.
Replace an old light fixture with modern tract lighting to balance lighting in the kitchen area. Under cabinet lighting is a good choice for a kitchen without an abundance of natural light.
Appliances
Replace old outdated appliances with new energy saving appliances to add beauty and functionality to a kitchen while saving money on electric bills. Base your choice of appliances on lifestyle and family. Take into consideration budget, current trends, design options and decor when choosing new appliances.
