Feng Shui Bathroom Decorating Tips

Feng shui, which is translated as “wind and water,” is the ancient Chinese art of changing the flow of chi or energy within a house. Although the bathroom is specifically associated with health in feng shui, using this system in your bathroom can help to enhance the wealth, health and happiness in your entire home.

The Five Elements of Feng Shui

In feng shui, you must use the five elements of wood, water, fire, earth and metal in proper balance. The bathroom naturally represents the water element. However, you can still use the water element in the form of an aquarium, sea shells or a fountain when decorating your bathroom. Bring in some natural potted plants such as ornamental bamboo to enhance the wood element.

Add an extra mirror or two to increase the metal element. Add some candles and lights to enhance the fire element. Install tile or add pottery to bring in more of the earth element. Keep in mind that the color scheme you select will also increase one of the feng shui elements in your bathroom. Red and orange are fire, black and navy blue are water, brown and yellow are earth, blue and green are wood and white and gray are metal.

Using a Bagua

A bagua is a type of map that you can use to figure out how to use feng shui in your home. A bagua is octagonal in shape. It also has nine areas or guas, each of which corresponds to a different aspect of home life. There are several places online where you can download a bagua to print. Hold the bagua so that the sections representing “Knowledge,” “Career” and “Helpful People” are facing you.

Divide the space into nine sections using the bagua as a guide. If your bathroom is very small, stand at the threshold of the front door of your home and use the bagua to determine what role the bathroom plays. If your bathroom is large, use the bagua at its door to divide the bathroom into nine sections. Read the rest of this entry »

Simple Bathroom Decorating

A bathroom is a place in your home where you should feel totally comfortable. It is also the only place in your home where your house guests are likely to be alone, so it is important that your bathroom say something positive about you and reflect who you are. If your bathroom is feeling a bit drab, it’s time to introduce some decorating ideas that will transform it.

1. Pick your color scheme. Color schemes often used in bathrooms include blue and green, but you can mix it up to choose any color. When choosing a color, be sure it fits your personality and the desired mood you want to create in your space. For instance, pink would most certainly be used in a girl’s bathroom, but orange can be used if you want your space to feel fun and lively.

To keep with a relaxed feeling, stick to blues, purples and greens, which produce a calming effect. Use your desired colors when purchasing anything from bathmats to toothbrushes so that everything in your bathroom keeps with a common decorative style.

2. Choose a theme, and stick to it when decorating. If you’ve picked a relaxing color scheme for your bathroom, an example theme that would incorporate those colors well would be a beach theme. To decorate, you could add decorative shells around your bathroom, use blue and green bath accessories and even place a mermaid figurine on your windowsill.

A pink bathroom designed for a little girl could benefit from beautiful flowers to help keep the space feeling girly. If you’re decorating a his-and-hers style bathroom, stick to a neutral theme with neutral colors that everyone will likely enjoy for a clean and elegant look.

3. Throw out old faucets and bathroom hardware, and replace them with a newer and more sophisticated look. You can replace the plain, silver faucet you most likely have in there now with a golden, delicately curved faucet or other designs that are available at a hardware store and fit your bathroom style. You can even dress up the toilet paper holder with a nicer version purchased from any hardware store.

4. Dress up plain mirrors stuck to the wall by surrounding them with elegant trimming. Small tiles glued to the wall can frame a mirror beautifully. Even simple wood (make sure it’s been treated to be water-resistant) around a mirror like an average picture frame can give a mirror a whole new look and feel.

5. Change your bathroom’s lighting. A few strategically placed candles can do wonders to transform the atmosphere of a bathroom, but don’t ignore the overhead lighting. Bathrooms often come equipped with harsh lights and simple light fixtures.

Change the bulbs to a softer glow variety, and invest in more beautiful fixtures to wrap them in from your local hardware store for an instant bathroom pick-me-up.
